WILLIAM ERICKSON
In Rain
Late Afternoon—
Lahar Near Lava Canyon
what cannot stay
inside the earth becomes
the earth
my I relates the greying
light of constancy
to that god
who says the sum
of days might make
a sudden partner
of one’s need
for static
just to sleep
I hand its hand two smaller hands
that cast my suffering
beyond me
like a flashlight
